The Sikkim Manipal University (SMU) of Health, Medical and Technological Sciences was established in 1995 to provide professional education in Sikkim and surrounding states. Its constituent college, The Sikkim Manipal Institute of Technology offers engineering degree courses in Computers, Information Technology, Electronics and Communication and Electrical Engineering. Through the distance education wing of the university, it offers IT based courses at study centres throughout India.

Considering the wide spread need for IT education across the country, Sikkim Manipal University, has started offering degree programs in IT through distance education. Two of its flagship programs in Information Technology, through it distance education wing, are Bachelor of Science in Information Technology and Master of Science in Information Technology.

SMU offers the distance education programs through it study centres spread through out the country. CIIT is an authorized study centre of SMU, for the B.Sc. (IT) and MSc (IT) programs.

Academic Evaluation by the Sikkim Manipal University

The distance education program of the Sikkim Manipal University is comparatively new and the means for academic evaluation of the course are being worked out. At present the Sikkim Manipal University performs the academic evaluation using the following means.

The institutes need to send annual report to the university, highlighting their performance during the year. The results of the students on the university examinations are monitored.
