Grading in a Course

Based on a weighted average of marks obtained in examinations, quizzes, and other assignments during the Semester, a letter grade is awarded in each course in which a student is registered. CIIT follows the system of relative grading for awarding letter grades to the students in a course.

There are eight regular letter grades. The following table gives the correspondence between letter grades and the grade points assigned to them:

Letter Grade Grade Points
A+ 10
A   09
B+ 08
B   07
C+ 06
C   05
D   04
F   02

The letter grade F indicates that the student has failed in the course.

Grade Point Average

The overall performance of a student in a semester is indicated through the Semester Grade Point Average (SGPA), which is the weighted average of grade points scored by the student in the courses for which he is registered in the semester. The SGPA is computed on a scale of ten.

The cumulative performance of a student in the academic program is indicated through the Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA)

Unlike the conventional pattern, there is nothing like promotion from first year to second year and so on. The student who has not cleared all the courses of any year is allowed to take advanced courses of the successive year if he/she has passed the pre-requisite for such courses.

Inadequate Academic Performance

The academic performance of a student at the end of any Semester is considered inadequate if the SGPA for the Semester is less than 5.0.

A student is put on academic probation if his/her CGPA is less than 5.0 for two consecutive semesters.

Requirements For Graduation

A student is deemed to have completed the requirements for graduating from an Academic Program if he/she has

  1. Completed credit requirements by taking and passing all the prescribed courses for the Academic Program,
  2. CGPA of greater than or equal to 5.0,
  3. Satisfied all rules of evaluation,
  4. Satisfied the requirements specified by his/her Department, if any,
  5. Paid all dues to the Institute, and
  6. Has no case of indiscipline pending against him/her.

Note: The requirements for the award of degrees/diplomas/certificates of external agencies would be as per their rules and procedures.
